Historically Walsall has one of the highest morbidity and mortality rates
for coronary heart disease (CHD) in the West Midlands. Morbidity and
mortality have fallen in recent years, CHD has been a key priority and there
has been significant resources committed to local initiatives in both
primary and secondary care. Walsall also leads a Coronary Heart Disease
Collaborative across the Black Country. The use of cardiovascular medicines
in Walsall is 5% above the regional average with prescribing costs 20% above
the regional average.
The Medicines Management Project in Walsall is taking place in three wards
within Walsall East PCG, namely Hatherton Rushall, Aldridge Central & South
and Aldridge North & Walsall Wood. The population is predominately white
Caucasian and there is a mix of affluence in the Aldridge Central & South
ward and moderate deprivation in parts of both Hatherton Rushall ward and
Aldridge North & Walsall Wood.
There are 6 GP practices participating, ranging from a single handed to a
six doctor practice, with a total population of approximately 47,000
patients. Practice pharmacists supporting the implementation of the CHD NSF
currently serve all practices. There are seven community pharmacies
participating in the project, from health centre pharmacies to high street
pharmacies.
